I Like!

Posted by: laurane    in Food, Random

I got out from the lab today a bit after 2pm. I haven’t had lunch yet and I really didn’t feel like eating at home because 1) it was HOT at home. 2) I had to make lunch…

So I first tried Aroma cafe on campus, but they didn’t have much left at that time of the day. So I left Aroma, and decided to see what the cafe right under my apartment had- also nothing much left after 2pm… Unless they cooked something, but i wouldn’t know what to order anyway.

So i decided to head to Scoozi! :D I think I’ve decided that the place has my favourite lunch- the chicken salad. And it’s only good for lunch cuz if you order that for dinner, you get so much less chicken. Ok so i ordered the chicken salad- a Small (Cuz i planned on binging on some cake after that…), ordered a sparkling apple juice, and proceded to finish reading my book while waiting for my salad to come. But guess what, even the small salad came with a side bread… I had no idea. So instead of reading i was chomping away on bread… Then my salad came and it was big! well, she said ’small’ when she served it to me, so it wasnt wrongly made… but it was pretty big anyway. so by the time i finished my bread, salad and my apple juice.. I was quite full. no need for cake…. The salad curbed whatever cake cravings i had anyway. It was so good :)

The Chicken Salad (with some sort of yummy dressing, and capsicums cooked till so Soft and Sweet, even I LIKE IT. I mean, i never used to like capsicum...

Anyway, I did manage to finish my book today. I read while waiting for my PCR and gel stuff, I read summore after lunch in the nice air conditioned cafe with my apple juice…  :) sometimes i just love life (no matter how Friggin hot it is right now…)

Oh and thebook came from the library yesterday. I randomly found a couple of girlie books and a couple of dvds i plan to watch today. :)

Summer Research: Day 14

Posted by: laurane    in Summer Research

I did the whole thing by myself today! yay :)

and the gel turned out pretty good too. Me happy.

The're both the same thing. The top one is just inverted while the bottom is the actual uv image.

Started at 9:30. finished at 2:15pm. Took an hour break (two half an hour breaks while waiting for 1- the PCR cycle to complete 2- for the gel to run…)
and thats it! :)

Everything’s warm…

   Posted by: laurane    in Ramblings

It’s 34 deg outside (according to weather websites) and 34deg inside (according to my thermometer). So opening windows would not cool down nor heat up the house.

Ok that statement was completely useless and had no point.

I took a cold-ish shower just now. My soap was warm, my bathroom tiles were warm, the bathroom glass door was warm, my sink was warm, even my towel was warm. It felt like those hotel towels they just delivered to your room, fresh out from the dryer.

It would have been nice- If it was 30degrees cooler.

Did gel electrophoresis on the DNA we put through PCR yesterday.

Here’s my result:

Looks quite neat eh? :P

Then we made some media, then I went home. :D

Have I really changed?

Posted by: laurane    in About me, Thoughts

All it took was a good day at work with people I like working with… and I’m happy again :)

I’m annoyed at the fact that it takes me one entire year to feel comfortable in a new place though.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve been like this. When I moved to Sibu, I was quiet in primary one but when i got to primary 3, I got told off for talking too much. Then we left.

When we moved to Kuantan, I was a nobody in primary 4. In Primary 5,i sang Spice Girls songs with my friends really loudly in class. In primary 6, I became prefect. I was hoping to bring all that to secondary school and become someone from the start… but then we left.

When i arrived in Seoul, i was the odd one. I dressed funny, i spoke funny, i was malaysian but i’m chinese and i don’t speak chinese. No one can comprehend that (until now…) But i was THE ODD ONE. I had ONE friend for half the year. the other half i found some other odd people to be friends with. The next year, it started rather slow but by the end of the year, i was on top of the world. Then we left.

I started at UWC Singapore. And the same thing happened. By High School I felt like it was MY school. I’ve contributed so much, taken so much, and my life wouldnt be the same without that school… I was everything I wanted to be.

I guess I should just be really glad that my school life ended on a high.

Uni was a whole different situation. Everyone was new. But then came work… And once again I found myself falling into an environment where everyone seems to know each other and I’m the strange newbie.

So now, after one whole year, I’ve finally got some contacts, some phone numbers, and some facebook friends from work… Then I tell myself ‘If only I had tried getting contacts earlier…” But you know, its easier said than done.

What’s frustrating right now though, is that I’ve been waiting for the day when C gets back to Adelaide. But now that she’s coming back in a few days time, I’ve actually found new friends I could call when i’m bored…

Oh well, things don’t always happen the way we want it to. At least we still have a month holiday before uni starts. Plus I know that some friends I’ve recently made will be here for at least another year :)

Summer Research: Day 10

Posted by: laurane    in Summer Research

Started the morning by reading some papers about PCR. I’m going to learn how to do PCR stuff… Started the DNA isolation today. Tomorrow will be finishing off.

So I took off small samples of the bacteria i took out last week from the freezer… and did stuff with it. I won’t go into details, but I was working alone today, so I sneaked some pictures. Up till now I still don’t know if I’m allowed to take pictures in the lab…

Used a very old PCR machine to do the heating.Centrifuge machine

After that I subcultured the rest of the bacteria left on the plate…
I also got out some more bacteria from the freezer as controls for the PCR tomorrow.
This time I remembered pictures! :)
(OK image caption thingies NOT WORKING anymore. AGH #$%^& wth.)
Frozen bacteria in little tubes:
So I transferred some of the bacteria onto plates (like the red ones you see below…)
And incubated them in a 40deg incubator inside that fancy looking thing. Doesn’t it look like some infected dangerous item that came from some goverment secret lab??

New Year’s Eve Dinner

Posted by: laurane    in Going out

Here’s a short rundown of my dinner on New Year’s eve at D’s place.

We started off the night with some Guitar Hero while C and D finished off some last minute cooking.

Then we sat down for dinner. There was masak merah, curry, rendang, beef ball soup, fried rice, white rice… and cake. I made the fried rice and cake. I’m so happy people liked the cake :) overall, not your typical CNY meal, but the food was good!

Here’s J, N and D the host.

and Me and the rest of the gang (J,C, and J… their names all start with a J. hahaha…)

After dinner, we played some more guitar hero while some of us helped clear up dinner…

Then we played a couple of rounds of Poker!

No real money was involved. Just fancy chips :)

The end!
